The derivation of the Blood Brother’s can be connected to the high school band Vade, a group that singers Jordan Blilie and Johnny Whitney and drummer Mark Gajadhar formed when they were 15. In 1997 the project evolved into the Blood Brothers with the addition of bassist Morgan Henderson and guitarist Devin Welch. The group scraped together $200 and put out their first 7” (a lo-fi but ecstatic single recorded in a basement). The band replaced Welch with guitarist Cody Votolato and went on tour directly following his high school graduation.

The band’s sound featured a strong punk influence, a unique line-up headed by two singers and lyrics that were angst ridden but abstract. Many critics and fans have drawn comparisons between the groups sound and the music representing the 80s No Wave movement. The band have cited acts such as Gang of Four, Drive Like Jehu, Botch, and Antioch Arrow as major influences.

The Blood Brother’s released their studio debut “This Adultery Is Ripe” in 2000. The album did not make a huge commercial impact (much of the album was actually a negative commentary on mainstream society); however, it generated a cult following and solidified itself as a landmark album in the post-hardcore genre.

The band released their sophomore album “March on Electric Children” a year later to positive reviews. Like it’s predecessor it was riddled with unpredictable dynamics and a hard-edged drive. Unlike their last album it revolved around a storyline and was considered much “crazier” and “complex”. The label ARTISTdirect took immediate notice and struck a record contract with the band the following year. In 2003 the band put out arguably their best album to date “..Burn, Piano Island, Burn”. The album was recorded in the course of 2 months on an estimated budget of $25,000. It also marked the band’s first release through the labels Reincarnate Music and V2 Records. Blood Brothers released their EP “Rumors Laid Waste” this year; however, all the songs were recorded between 1998 and 1999.

The band’s next album, 2004’s “Crimes” was produced by Seattle based sound engineer John Goodmanson whose past credits include Blonde Redhead, Sleater-Kinney, and the Catheters. The group toured extensively for this release and played alongside bands like Against Me!, Kill Me Tomorrow, the Chinese Stars, and Coheed & Cambria.

A year later the band issued their EP “Love Rhymes with Hideous Car Wreck”, which included a live version of the title track and a remix of Gang of Four’s “Anthrax”. In 2006 the band released their 5th studio album “Young Machetes” through V2 Records. Guy Picciotto, the guitarist/vocalist of the hardcore punk bands Fugazi and Rites of Spring handled the production for the album. This was the group’s most commercially successful release, entering the charts at No. 92.

Blood Brothers broke up in 2007 and splintered off in two separate groups: Whitney formed Jaguar Love and the remaining members formed Past Lives. In 2009 Epitaph Records re-released the band’s first 4 albums and in 2014 the group reunited for FYF Fest.
